I have been looking at the excellent reliability data published by CU on these models before buying a SUV. Are there any years to avoid due to problems with reliability, overall handling, noise level, seating comfort on long trips, traction in snow ? What are the pluses with the Q4s for the additional money?

Q4s are quieter and have full time 4WD.
I would stay away from pre-'95 unless you have access to the full service history. Otherwise, you may get hit with the treaded broken exhaust manifold studs.
Interestingly enough, the handling, noise levels and traction in snow all seem to be dependent on the tires installed, in my opinion.
I would strongly recommend 2001 or newer so that you get the 3.5 V6.
