i have a 95 se-v6 4wd nissan pickup.....my tachometer has stopped working. i purchased a manual from advanced store and mentions nothing about this area. any ideas to fix it? is this something i can do myself or do i have to take it to the nissan dealer? thanks for any help

Neither. It's electronic and probably gets it's signal from the ECU. My guess would be it needs a new/used tach. Be hard to "test" without a scope to read the signal from the ECU etc.
Vacuum or cable?? :-) It's electronic and tied into the engine management system (computer).
I suspect that Steve's advice is spot on (not that he needs my validation :-] ). The factory schematic shows the signal circuit originating from the ECU, and in addition to the Tach it also feeds the A/T Control Unit. Verifying whether the signal exists at the Tach would indicate which direction to troubleshoot next. Repairing the Tach would be an exercise in futility for most. Again Steve's opinion of needing a new/used Tach unit if an appropriate signal exists at the Tach terminals appears to be the most likely solution.

If the AT seems to work OK, then there probably is a good signal from the ECU and the tach is bad.
Vacuume operated???? A 95 Nissan I'm sure is neither. WTF has a vacuume operated tach??
Some do have a resistor but these are WAY overkill is size and I've never seen them have a problem, seen plenty of bad tachometers.
