low fuel efficiency in Nissan Altima GXE 1994

Dec 20, 2004 2 Replies

I have a 94 Nissan Altima GXE (with 101k) that is giving a fuel efficiency of 14 miles per gallon.. That may be partly because I drive most of time to my work that is 1 mile away with as many as 3 street lights... because on highways the fuel economy seems to be very good (28 - 30 miles per gallon)... Is there anything I can do because the gap seems between the two seems to be real big or is it natural? Any help or insight will be appreciated... Regards DJ

I can help you out on this greatly as I am probably an expert on this, but I am always learning so I 'm not goign to brag in anyway.

Lets start with this for starters: how long are you keeping the car on , after a cold start, before you drive off in the morning? I hope you are not 'warming it up'. It's designed, and is optimal for gas mileage, that you start car (cold start -- you know , like 6 hrs straight or more of just sitting there off) and then drive 10-30 seconds later. if its hot out, 5-10 seconds is fine. if its near o degrees or less, 30 seconds if the most . the car will warm up faster when driven.

what do you say to this ?
