'96 maxima front passenger door speaker (non bose)

had persistent problems with the left front speaker in my car. it would always be the first to blow or act funny. three speakers later, its acting funny, but i think its just a loose cable, soooo:

how do i get access to the front door passenger speaker? i don't really get down and dirty with my car, so i'm not sure how to go about it. does the grill pop off, or do i have to remove the entire door panel? is it a relatively painless process?

thanks

You can usually search this group for common questions. Here's my previous posting on this subject:

You'll destroy the entire door panel if you try to pry off "the speaker cover". It's all one piece.

  1. Take off the plastic surround piece from the inside door handle. Use a flat, blunt tool. Best would be an old 2 inch wide paint scraper. Use this tool to push down on the little plastic latch molded at the top of the piece, about 2/3 of the way forward. There is also a little latch on the bottom of the piece. Once you free these up, slide the surround to the rear. There is a latch on the rear that is much bigger, and it can only slide to the rear once the other 2 are free.
  2. Remove the power door lock/window switch assembly. There is a plastic latch molded on two sides of the assembly, but you need to pry mostly at the front edge, where there is a stout metal clip. Don't chip the edges of the assembly. Remove the connector.
  3. Remove the little plastic plug in the door handle with a screwdriver, then remove the screw and pull out the door handle cup.
  4. Remove the door light cover by prying on the end. Remove the entire bulb holder and unclip the connector.
  5. Remove the 2 screws at the bottom of the door.
  6. Pull the bottom of the panel away from the door gingerly, and feel for the resistance at the 2, 8, and 10 o'clock positions. These are 4 plastic clips, 2 on the left side, and 2 on the right. You will have to slide a tool like a big screwdriver under the panel and pull the clips out of the door, freeing the panel. If you only pull on the panel, you just might damage the area where the clips fit into the panel.
  7. After freeing the clips, push straight upward on the rear part of the door panel. Then free up the front part of the panel near the mirror.
  8. Hold the panel where it is, and disconnect the trunk release connector by reaching around to the inside of the panel itself. The switch stays connected to the panel.

Work slowly and gingerly or you will likely damage something.
