97 SE service engine soon light.

Hello,

The service engine light came on yesterday on my Maxima.

Just wondering.....what is the most likely issue?

135,000 but continues to run great.

It will be a few days before I get a chance to take it anywhere. Is there much chance of doing damage? I can't tell that it is running any different that ever.

Thanks,

My guess it's the O2 Sensor's You can go to any AutoZone and they will check the codes for you. If it's running ok and not heating up. I don't see any problem in driving it. Is gas milage falling off?

Lacking an Autozone, you can pull the codes using a screwdriver and counting the blinks of the CEL. There are a few links on the web that show the procedure, as do any manual.

Get the code checked! Hope it's not the cam position sensor or it WILL die on the road, probably in traffic, like my old 97 SE did.

I took my Maxima to my local Auto Zone......they hooked it up.....can't remember the code # but he said it could be one of a couple of things related to the exhaust or something to do with the gas cap/fuel lock or vapor lock.

I had forgot to mention that prior to the service light coming on, I had purposely let the fuel get low enough that the low fuel light had came on. I was getting ready to do a mileage check.

Anyway, he reset it and it hasn't came back on yet.

Just wanted to share and thanks for the information.
