I am trying to choose between a 2004 Altima and a 2004 Maxima. I noticed the Altima 3.5SE comes with the same VQ35DE engine as the Maxima. Can someone tell me what are the major differences between the two models?
Besides, the Maxima has changed a lot over the years. I'd appreciate a summary of the histiry of the model, particularly the highlights of this generation as compared to the last generation.

That VQ35DE engine is all over the Nissan/Infiniti lineup:) It's in the Quest 3.5, the Pathfinder 3.5, the Infiniti G35 sedan and coupe, the
350Z, the Fx35, did I miss any? :)Anyhow, the VQ35DE, when you compare the Altima to the Maxima, is more powerful in the Maxima, 265 hp vs 240 hp in the Altima. Nissan gets 20 extra hp from the engine due to several factors such as a better exhaust (as shown by those 4 pipes sticking out of the Maxima) and CPU re-mapping, among other things. The most significant aspect of each car's differing performance seems to be mostly due to the CPU. It can get quite confusing. For example, the 350Z, G35 sedan and coupe, all have the VQ35DE in RWD format, yet, the sedan has 260 hp, the coupe has
280 hp, and the 350z gets the king VQ35 at 287 hp. Those marketing guys at Nissan are having alot of fun with that motor:)CD
Yup! You left out the Infiniti QX4 and the Nissan Quest and Murano! The ubiquity of the variants of that engine is truly astounding. I wonder whether any other brand has a single engine which powers such a large percentage of its offerings.
