Kilometres or Miles

Hi,

I have a 91 GXE with 364K Kilometres. I went to a repair shop in Maryland recently, and they wanted to know the exact mileage on the car? I asked them to convert it, but the repair man insisted the mileage was 364K miles..... what counts - is he right?

Given that the car was originally built for Canada, does the odometer reading refer to Kilometres or miles driven?

Also, do any of you know of a good mechanic in the Baltimore area?

all the best - NM

If it's a '91 and was built for sale in Canada, it will be in Kilometres. To my knowledge, '86 was the last year that odometers were allowed to be in miles, even if the speedo may show both.

Conversion: 1 mile = 1.61 km, 1 km = .62 miles

364000 Kilometres = 225680 miles

There are quite a few in the area that I hear are good. My favorate is Foreign Auto Experts in Elkridge, MD. Their number is 410-796-4418. I believe the head mechanic/owner is Brian (can't remember his last name, but it may be Miller). I've dealt with them three time, but it's been a few years. However, from what I hear, they're still one of the most respected repair shops in the area.

- 90 SE which had a very slow A/C freon leak. Two other shops couldn't find (one kept the car for week looking for it and the other replace the evaporator thinking that might be it.). A friend in the car business recommended Foreign Auto Experts so I gave them a shot. They found it within a few hours and it turned out the freon was leaking through a metal pipe (!) which was most likely flawed during manufacturing (believe they described it as micro fisures). Apparently the reason everyone had so much trouble finding the leak is that they were focusing on the connections, and the leak was so slow you had to have the sensor right by it. I believe I payed around $90 for the part, labor and freon.

- Same car several years later, lost the auto trannie fluid while going down the highway. Had it towed to them expecting the worst. But it turned out to be a fairly simple fix and I had the car back for less the $100. They could have really taken me to the cleaners since I wasn't sure I was going to get out for less than $1000.

- My father's 90 GXE wouldn't idle and the dealer said the injectors needed to be replaced. Had him take it to Foreign Auto Experts and they gave him a can of "industrial" injector cleaner and told him to drive the car around for a few days. Not only did that fix it, Brian didn't even charge for the cleaner. BTW, that car now has 260K miles (not kilometers) on it and is still going strong.

It was somewhere between 1975 and 1980 that all vehicules sold in Canada had to be metric"ised"

My 1975 Ford Pinto had milles, My 1980 Buick Skylark had kilometres.

'76/'77 was the changeover year. I bought a 76 Corolla which had the speedo in miles and had to buy stickers to put on the guage that summer when the road signs changed. From that point on all cars sold had to have the larger numbers in km.
