306Xsi Lambda sensor

My lad has been told the lambda sensor has failed on his 1995 Xsi. Anyone know if this a standard 4 wire sensor? Been quoted £95 from Pug but there are some on Ebay for a hell of lot less. How easy is it to replace this?

TIA

cheers, Len

What were the symtoms when it went? He's not getting very good fuel consumption and Pug dealer says the sensor has gone. Would this cause high fuel use ?

I had the orange engine management light illuminated on the dashboard. I flashed the code out using a Gunsons unit and it indicated lambda sensor failure. If the lambda sensor needs replacing the engine management light should be light on the dashboard. Get proof from the peugeot dealer (be very careful trusting what a peugeot dealer mechanic says), or better still go to an independant garage and get the ecu unit code read. Sometimes just cleaning them will give them another 6 months or so.

That's part of the problems he has, the management light comes on, goes off for a while and then comes back on. So guess Pug were right and the sensor has gone. Thanks for the help and info.

Mine used to go on and off as well. When it's on I'm led to believe that the car will be in 'limp home mode'. basic engine management settings and poor fuel effiency. Get it fixed as quickly as you can. I'd order a new lambda sensor off the web or a decent car parts place other than a Peugeot dealer, and either fit it yourself or get a decent garage you know to fit the new sensor.

Good luck.

30mpg on what type of driving?

With our 1998 306 1.4l I get about 38-40mpg on a 400 mile round trip on the motorway at 70-80mph. I think I can, on 90% motorway drives, push up to 440 miles out of a tank before the light comes on (6 litres left I think I read somewhere).

On a 75% round town, 25% 20 mile round trips style driving, I might get 360 - 375 miles out of a 50 litre fill up - so about 32 - 34mpg.

I've never considered these to be too bad, especially as I tend to be quite hard on my acceleration etc. When our clutch was dodgy, my driving style was more sedate and I believe our fuel efficiency increased. I'd probably also do better driving at 60-70mph rather than

70-80mph. D
