406 HDi - Steering wheel Vibrates

Nov 09, 2004 6 Replies

Hi,

Yr 2000 W-reg 2.0 Hdi 406. Most of the driving I do is motorway work and there is 60000 on the clock with FSH.

However, it is becoming more and more noticable that at around the 80mph mark the steering wheel vibrates heavily - if I slow down to about 60 then it is not so bad (but it still does it) and if I speed up to about 90mph then likewise.

Also, when braking realtively hard, although not hard enough for the ABS to kick in I get the same effect. I have renewed discs and pads about 4000 miles ago. Also fitted a new engine mount.

Any ideas?

TIA Oli

Have you had the wheels balanced. I have found on a couple of cars (a Cortina and, later, a Princess) that even normal "wheel off" balancing did not work and I have had to have them balanced in situ.

Can't say I have - ill take it to my local garage and get them to check the balancing. Maybe even later today. Ill let you know what happens! Thanks.

Sorted! Was the wheel balancing. The guy who did it for me said that "they were well out of line". I have just vowed NEVER to go back to my local Peugeot Garage - im not going to name them but they have caused me more trouble than they are worth. Time for the manager to get a letter methinks!

Thanks Buccaneer and Longshot!

Glad your sorted. The only time I go anywhere near Pug main dealers is to test drive one of their cars. Let the salesman start salivating and then go and buy one elsehwhere!
