406 speedo fault

Feb 26, 2004 10 Replies

I have a 406 estate 2.1 exec. The speedo does not work on first starting off and it would seem that after about 10 mins it starts to jump a bit and after taking the car up to about 65-70 it will then kick in. sometimes it wil start to work from the off, sometimes it will kick in whilst still driving slowly. The speedo is of the electrica type (not cable drive). I've been underneath and disconnected the loom and tried to give it a clean but it's so innaccesible and the female socket is so small it's difficult to do. I notice from an earlier post that someone recomended disconnecting the battery for a few minutes, this I've tried and thought I'd cracked it, but the next morning it wasn't working again. Has anyone got any suggestions. Cheers in anticipation

Hi Adrian,

You need to replace the speedometer transducer box, which is located under the glovebox small black box with white plug and retaining clip.. or so it was on mine.

I had the same problem and it costs about £23 to fix, hope that helps

Cheers mate, I'll try that. I stumbled on this site by chance. It's very comforting to know that there are similar minds out there who begrudge paying £40 an hour to a dealer. The problem is that I have to do the clutch next, allegedly a 6 hour job. £379 at the dealer, and £200+vat for labour on top of £150 for the clutch from an independant!!!!

I'm not sure without checking, but I think 6 hours is a bit too much.

4 hours is more like it (I think). But then again £40 an hour is quite cheap. Most of them are upwards of £65. You could always find a dealer that still does "Parts Wear" for cars three years or older but it is starting to be phased out now.

Hi Devanti, I tried to contact you direct, but had no joy. Can you e-mail me so I can ask you a few questions about this black box. Take a look at my e-mail address, rather than just using "reply to sender",

Thanks Neil

Cheers Devanti, The Speedo Interface Unit (or ECU as the dealer liked to call it) has done the trick. £38. Had to have it as I didn't like the idea of'Her Indoors' driving with v.light steering. I'm still shopping around for the clutch!

Today I took the box out of mine. I is a sealed box, but I hacksawed it open, sprayed a load of cantact cleaner on it. It's a bit better, but still not right. Any ideas on how to find a dry joint?

Neil

Thanks for the info, it doesn't sound too promising.

I cured a problem on my radio today which has been bugging me for a year or more. I removed it and ran some solder around a few joints. I used to get loud bangs out of the right hand front speaker and other crackles as well.

It is not always easy to see a dry joint unless you have a magnifying glass but the solder around a connection may look a little grey and crystalline or a connection may be moveable. However one needs to be able to gain access to the printed circuit board so if it is all potted in resin there is no chance, hence my question..

Hi Adian,

Yeah mee to my clutch needs doing, only I was told 16 hours labour at £800 + the VAT and thats not including a £99 lucas clutch kit from euro car parts ! so over a grand ! Lucky that I can do it myself, ok so with the help of my older wiser and more mechanically minded brother !

I got the theory sorted its now the practical to pass !

lol
