My son's J-Reg 205XL, TU engined, is difficult to start.
When cold it will only ever start by pumping the accelerator, regardless of choke.
Fuel comes through the fuel pipe fine, so I think the pump and inline filter are OK.
I assume it is not air or electrical.
So where do I start on looking at the carb, once I have the air filter off?

Take the top of the carb off and look in the float chamber and make sure it is about three quarters full of fuel (ish). If yes then operate the throttle and see if fuel squirts out of the jet in the venturi part of the carb (where the air goes through). If not then remove the jets at the bottom of the float chamber and blow out. There is usually a filter in the "fuel in" connector. Remove and clean. If it still won't start, have a look at the diaphragm on the side. Make sure there are no tears in it. HTH
the cold start units on these were notorious for failure, havent done one for a while since i rarely see 205's nowadays, however the unit is located on the left hand side of the carb, i recal being able to buy a repair kit which comes with a new wax plunger (this is the part that wears out) from main dealer. its not a difficult job to do and no you dont need to start ripping the carb to bits, this unit is attached to the outside of the carb and is connected to the throttle and the choke linkages. there should be 2 small coolant pipes that run through the unit, the choke is operated by the coolant temperature..(this is what the wax plunger is for, when cold is remains closed, and when warm the plunger is pushed out and opens the choke unit)

Sorry but these were NOT fitted to 205 TU engines. They were all manual chokes, before they started fitting injection engines.
