Noisy Tappets

Hi all,

I have a renault 19 16v.

The tappets are hydraulic and over the past 6 months or so i am getting a problem with noisy tappets. basically, the hydraulic tappets should tap a few times for the first few seconds, til the prime up with oil. mine however tend to keep tapping, like a old fiesta until the engine comes up to normal temp.

i have run treatments in the oil, (wynns hydraulic treatment and even redex)

then i replaced all the tappets for a set i refurbished, these were each individually taken apart (ie, plunger out of each bucket) and thoroughly cleaned and re-primed with fresh oil, when these were installed it cured the problem! but only for a few months, the noise crept back to where it was before, tapping til up to temp.

so i think i can rule out sticky/dirty tappets.

i run 10w40 and tried 10w50 once....its always had regular oil/filter changes.

it is running reground cams, but that didnt seem to make a difference for the first year they were in.(they aint that wild anyway)

so im left thinking that perhaps there is a problem with oil getting up to the head, and into the tappets with sufficient pressure. maybe the pump is getting tired, its 114K old now...

other than biting the bullet and pullin the whole lump out and re-ringing it along with all the other usual bits INC. a new oil pump (which i want to do anyway sometime soon) any other possibilities for my ongoing tapping problem.

gettin sick of sounding like an old fiesta when cold.

many thanks in advance for comments.

Jon

Hello.

Make sure that there isn't a blocked oil pathway preventing the oil from circulating round the head and back down again. Lack of oil can cause noisey tappets.

It could also be that the cams have worn - you may wish to try your factory cams back in and see if it makes a difference.

Yes i have thought of doin this...of course it is only the hassle of stripping it that has prevented me doin this so far, of course it is the best thing to do and i will do it in the end no doubt...

oil/filter

difference

i shall have another look at the cams and check their condition.

thanks for your reply, and it is really obvious that it prolly just needs a good strip down and clean. i will do it....soon....ish :-D
