2.3 quad 4 water pump

i just bought a new water pump for my 89 grand am. When i put the pump on , the spline lines up but the pump dosn't go all the way on. There is about a

8th of an inch gap between the pump and the timing case cover. Should i tighten the bolts to close the gap ? thanks '

Is that one of the years where you had to take the front timing cover off too, to make sure the pump drive gear didn't misalign? That's my only idea. GW

i'm not sure. i already have the timing cover and the head off.. the spline seems to line up very well. thanks
