'86 Bonneville Brougham emergency brake issue and maintainance manual question ...

-- I have an 1986 Bonneville Brougham that I bought a few months ago but I didn't get the maintainance manual for it. I do obvious things like checking the coolant and lubricant fluid levels but since I don't have the manual I don't know if I should be doing other things that I don't know about. Is there a way to either get a manual for it or is there another way to find this information out?

-- I forgot to release the emergency brake one day and started driving away with it still engaged, and although the car moved sluggishly it did move --- clearly there is some kind of problem with the emergency brake. Is there an easy way to tell what's wrong with what and what needs replacing or fixing? Is replacing or fixing an emergency brake a job that could possibly be done by an amateur without a hoist?

You can buy Chilton or Haynes manuals for your car at bookstores or auto parts stores. Local libraries have them too.

Try ebay too. If you want a Factory GM manual try searching for Helm Inc. Car parts swap meets are also a good source for used manual's. A GM manual will have more detail on your vehicle that Chiltons or Haynes.

Your emergency brake cable may just be out of adjustment. It is possible to drive with the emergency brake engaged. As old as your car is you need to check that the cable has released fully or the rear brake shoes may be dragging and will wear out in no time.

If your not parking the car on a San Fransisco type street I wouldn't even touch the emergency brake.

Good Luck,
