Changing Sunfire 5 speed fluid

I want to change the gear oil on my 98 Sunfire 2.2 But I'm not sure where the drain & fill plugs are. There seems to be a number of bolts that dont seem to be holding anything on, but I didn't want to start unbolting anything I can get a wrench on. So... any pointers? Is the fill hole on the top somewhere (I saw something sort of below the brake fluid res. that could be it) or is it on the side?

Is there a picture on a web site somewhere?

Also I have a haynes book (that doesn't bother to show me a picture of the transmission) and it says I need 2.0 quarts (1.89 liters) of syncromesh fluid (GM 12345349) I called the dealer and they keep it in stock but mentioned that I needed 2.5 liters (2.64 quarts)

Anyone know which is right?

I was just wondering. Did no one answer because the question is seen as stupid, or is the answer not known by the people in this group?

If I was at work, and had the car in the air, I could figure it out in

30 seconds.....but I'm here at home, and I don't have a Sunfire in my garage, so.....that's why I didn't answer. You'd be surprised how much I "figure out" on a dily basis, rather than trying to remember things. Sorry, GW (mechanic and daily reader)

It was a good question but I don't know the answer. Like GW said, we tend to just look at a mechanical object and immediately understand nearly everything about it. I don't know of any websites for sticks. The drain/fill plugs (if any) should look like drain/fill plugs. The fill plug is usually at the full level. Don't go taking anything off if you are not 99% sure. Don't trust Haynes. Call several dealers and find out for sure how much fluid to put in. Or find a MOTOR'S manual and look it up in there.

Thank you both for the advice, I'll have a closer look at it tomorrow. I think I'll be able to figure it out. I'm brand new at "Do It Yourself", so I'm trying to be very carefull with things I've never delt with before.

You right about Haynes, it literaly has three pages for Manual Transaxle, and pretty much just covers removal/installation. Do you know where to find a Motor's Manual; or who the publisher is?

Thanks Aga> Will wrote:

I usually get mine from the library. I do an inter-library search via the library website and have the books sent to my local branch a few blocks away. It's cheaper than buying books.

They make books and CD's on just about everything automotive.
