how do you tell 3 speed auto from 4 speed auto? Thanks

4 speed has OD, D, 2, and L.
3 speed has D,2, and l.
By the oil pan configuration. Sometimes by how many detents are in the shift, but not always. Of course a front driver is a horse of a different color and I have no idea for those situations.

You could "feel" the shifts:
1-2, 2-3 for both 3 and 4 speed, AND 3-4 for a 4 speed You may feel the TC lock up also, giving the illusion that a 3 speed trans has 4 speeds. You could read the tag on top of the trans, assuming GM. (It's near the shift detent rod/lever/cable on the trans.) You could tell us what particular car, if you have one in mind.Join the Discussion
