how do you tell 3 speed auto from 4 speed auto? Thanks

4 speed has OD, D, 2, and L.

3 speed has D,2, and l.

By the oil pan configuration. Sometimes by how many detents are in the shift, but not always. Of course a front driver is a horse of a different color and I have no idea for those situations.

You can tell from the shifter if you know what you're looking at. You could also count how many times it changes gears.

You could "feel" the shifts:

1-2, 2-3 for both 3 and 4 speed, AND 3-4 for a 4 speed You may feel the TC lock up also, giving the illusion that a 3 speed trans has 4 speeds. You could read the tag on top of the trans, assuming GM. (It's near the shift detent rod/lever/cable on the trans.) You could tell us what particular car, if you have one in mind.
