Gas smell and noise

Hi, i have a 94 grand prix my husband had changed the plugs and wires but after he did it, i drove it to the gas station and it died on me so when i started it back up i felt a big thump in the motor and ever since when i turn the heat on i smell gas and exhaust fumes inside and outside of the car and there is a noise in the motor and everyone was saying it was the belt tension pully so he baught one but auto zone gave him the wrong one we took it back and got another but it wasn't the right size so he ended up putting the old one back on just so we could keep it started from the cold weather, but it's been to cold to fix it, and now my husband said he doesn't think thats the problem i could here the noise coming from the thing thats hooked to the power steering pump but i never had any problem with the power steering and it doesn't squeel. Can anyone help please my car has been sitting because it can't be driven. Thanks

Perhaps we can separate the two problems in better detail to see if someone can help you with. For example:

1> smelling gas, does you car drive and idle normally? Exhaust system is in good working order? Did you have this problem before you change the plugs and wires? 2> noise, does it impact your drive ability? Noise occurs at idling or while vehicle is moving?
