84 911 oil sender help needed

Can someone help me. My 84 carrera oil gauge stays at 5 most of the time, occasionally it jerks to 3 andthen back to five. rarely, at idle ,it reads about 3. This started suddenly (106,000 on engine). When I ground the sender wire the gauge goes to 0. Now, I can't get at the sender to remove it and I can't find any info in my service manual on how to check the sender. I took the gauge out and there is no binding or rubbing of the needle, it seems to jerk when it moves. Can anyone tell me how to check the sender, how to remove it with out any special tools, and how to determine whether my problem is the gauge or sender. Thanks alot

No disrespect for any a.a.p.911 folks, as I am one, but probably not.

Maybe someone there or here knows the answer, so I'll x-post for fun anyways, but we also tend to read both groups. A few of us hang about like old men outside cooling ourselves in the shade of the quiet storefront, keeping some semblance of Usenet alive with our banter and sometimes raising our crooked arms to point a crooked finger the way toward those new-fangled forums. You know, down near where the old Johnson farm used to be. Just take the third fork in the road and turn left where the oak tree was. You'll be there in no time.

What I mean is, from sheer traffic alone, he'll be more likely to get his fill of information at a moderated group such as:

There are good books too, if you are into that sort of thing.
