88 944

Going to look at a 88 944 with only 83,500 miles tomorrow. The guy is only asking 4600 dollars for the car and says it is in nice shape. Just wondering about the general information of the car such as horsepower, performance, known problems, reliablity. I know about the major services and records (which the car doesnt have). What should I look for on on the test drive? Such as oil pressure, clutch feel, engine power, smoking or anything abnormal. I know you guys answer these kinds of posts day in and day out, so if you want to just send me off to a website I dont blame you for not wanting to type out a buying guide for me:) I've been looking around on the net and have found some handy information, but hearing from people and their opinons is always worthwhile. Thanks.

Don't bother as its an Audi, not a real Porsche.

Hi

If you like the car ask if you can take it for a buyers inspection at a Porsche specialist or a trusted garage. There are a number of services that cost a lot of money on a 944.

Timing belt every 4 years or 60,000 miles waterpump suspension brakes clutch tires

If there is no service record expect first service costs of about $ 2,000.

My mechanic quoted $300 for the job. That includes factory mounts. For = the type mounts that they are, that's more than reasonable.

Is that a rather exact rpm threshold for bad engine mounts? Could the smoothing out happen at a somewhat higher rpm like 1500+? I suspect that the engine mount on my 951 is not all that great, but my dad who is a mechanic (not porsche though) for many years thinks it's the exhaust that is causing the vibration.

anywhere from 1200 to 1500 rpm, vibration below that equals bad motor mounts

go to

, click on garage shop manual, slide down to the "M's" and read the two things on motor mounts.

87 951 (and just did mine, made a world of difference.
