997 News

CAR magazine of the UK is reporting on and showing pictures of the new 997s due sometime this year. As per earlier reports from as long ago as late 2002, the

997 will return to an "oval style" headlamp like what the 993s had (Boxsters will probably retain the current fascia). In addition, the 997 will be built on an upgraded 996 platform and will sport an engine enlarged to 3.8 litres and 340 in "base" trim, as well as a revised 6-speed manual. Current 320Hp 996s can pull off 0-60 in 4.4 seconds with a good driver on board, and there's no reason I can forsee that the upcoming 997 shouldn't be able to match the C5 Z06/C6 Corvette 0-60 time of about 4.0 seconds. The Carrera 4 S will return along with a 2wd S variant, and it was said in earlier reports that S variants will recieve standard power upgrades (probably to around 360Hp). The 997 based Turbo will sport at least 450Hp, and the GT3 and GT2 will be upgraded accordingly as well. Expect this to be an "interim" model, which will last approx. 2 years while Porsche readies an all-new 998 said to be powered by an 8-cylinder engine.
