HELP: 944 Odometer Failure...

Hi,

I own a 1984 Porsche 944. The odometer is starting to go bad. Teh trip odometer has trouble making it past the "zero" on the tenths of a mile digit. It lags when it gets to zero in this digit, and the nfinally proceeds. I think there is a gear inside that is gone bad according to this page

. however, I have an"early style" 944, and not a late one. Is there a replacement gear I canget for my car? I can only find ones for 85.5-92 on the internet. Thanks.

There are so many of these at the Porsche breakers, it's barely worth opening it up to do the repair. You can get the part number for your speedo from the edge of the face to get a perfect match.

The failure is usually caused by resetting the trip meter while moving.

Along the same lines, I just bought (today) an '88 944. The odo does not work. I am sure I can handle the repair myself, but how do I remove the instrument cluster? The PO is supposed to be hooking me up with the manual on CD but I don't have it yet.

thanks,

(click on garage workshop manual, click on g, open appropriate page..)

for an 88 with the airbag, step one is disconnect the battery, step 2 is remove the air bag (uses torx bit from the backside ,,,, , place it somewhere safe FACE UP, then follow the excellant instructions,,,,, yes , you have to remove the steering wheel.... !!!!

OK... I took it apart last night and here the gear that meshes with the worm gear, well the little part of it is half stripped... I shimmed the gear that it drives over with a piece of business card so it works for now but I'd like to fix it right... anywhere I can get just that gear?

thanks,

WHAAAAAAAAAA?

I didn't think the sticker shock would start this early...

On the upside I passed inspection with flying colors today, mechanic came out to tell me what a nice car I had...
