What's better on the track? Brand new, top of the line performance street tires or the same tires worn almost down to slicks?

would love to but that means buying and storing another set of rims. Are any of the competition tires street legal?
Chris
The race-compound tires which have DOT approval are street-legal, but are not usually recommended for daily street driving, especially in poor conditions (rain, snow, mud, bad roads, etc.)
There are many brands available in R-compound DOT tires, including Hoosier, Kumho, Yokohama, Toyo, Michelin, BFG and Goodyear. Some are more suitable for street use than others. All of them will have a relatively short lifespan in daily street use.
