05 Prius, leather seats, and air bags.

I realize that in the effort to keep their car "green" Toyota doesn't offer leather seats in the Prius. Does anyone know about an issue with leather and air bags where dealers discourage putting in the leather because the stiching may not break apart in an emergency to allow the air bags to deploy? Thanks.

Toyota doesn't seem to have any problem with leather in other vehicles as it's available as an option in at least some versions of even the Corolla. Toyota's luxury Lexus line has had leather for some time.

It is widely believed that leather will be a factory option in the 2006 Prius.

Leather is confirmed as an option, with the package code on some websites like

Some people argue that leather is more environmentally friendly than polyesther because of manufacturing techniques and the waste involved.

reports that it will be offered as the $1000 upgrade that it is today.

All I want is leather and airbags.

Hum...don't know where they came from (could have been a dealer thing), but, my housemate's 2005 Prius (may it rest in peace) came from the dealer with leather seats. Considering that leather IS a renewable resource and uses far less petroleum to produce than the synthetics, I could see why it would be a good option...don't know why there would be an issue with it, except of course, with folks that are not into using cow parts of any sort *smile*. Your dealer can install leather in any vehicle. Our dealer charges about $1600 for leather seats.
