milage

Anyone know what milliage I should be getting in a Rover Metro 96, 1.4,

114, SLI auto.

It seems to get quite bad miliage, even on the motorway. Is this normal?

Thanks

Depends what you call bad. I'd be expecting around 40mpg for an 1.4 auto at about 60mph but I've never owned a Metro. I hear rumours that the fuel economy on these engines suffers badly if the throttle body is gunked up so spraying some carb cleaner into it may help.

Thanks

I've been told its bad as its a small sports engine.

I find that the idle is very high, which obviously makes things worse.

If the idle is above about 900rpm then check the coolant temperature sensor - the ECU could be thinking the engine is cold so upping the idle speed and enriching the mixture - would make it crap on fuel...

Turns out my air filter was pretty bad.

Will try new plugs and filter.. see what happens.
