i have a shift problem on a 89 900. it wiil not go in to 5th of reverse and pop,s out second. is it some thing i can fix myself .

Check out the rubber shift coupling, which couples the shaft going from the gear stick to the shaft going to the gearbox. See how much play there is in it.
I'm seriously considering having the above statement tatooed on my forehead, or at least put in my sig ;-)
If it's not that, then it's most likely one or more of your (3) engine mounts. You can check for play by loading the engine with the car stationary, and watching for engine movement. Should be minimal.
