I'm sure its a fine franchise and all - but I feel comfortable there are just as many SAAB's here in Canada as there are in Thailand (which has it's own franchise). Probably more - given the basic practicality of the automobile come January/February north of the 59th.

Yeah but Canada is attached to the US, other locations around the world it may not be nearly so easy to get something from right across the border.

You would think that according to the PR and any map you happen to pull out - but sadly - it is just not the case. Putting aside that 1/3 the way across Canada is about the same distance as Paris to Moscow - there is still a fully staffed border and seperate currency in place here.

It will cost me at least $45 ($56 after exchange and fees for same) for two week shipping on a used pair of struts from Tulsa - before the customs brokerage of $50 and the GST (VAT) of 15% on it *all* by the time it gets here.

Nope - Canada is no more attached to the United States than Cuba, at least as far as this consumer can figure. I know it really doesn't make much sense and as I said, fine United States franchise though I'm sure it is.

But every time I see someone directing Canadian biz to a US shop - I have to treat it as a pure luxury and, I gotta say, that sux on a lot of levels now that I have the Aero of my dreams.

Um, might have to do with finding available people to do it. If you want a franchise, call 'em & see what they say?

I'm very disappointed to hear that. I can sympathise especially, as I have had electronic designs of mine / my client's ( hardware and software ) blatantly ripped off by an Indian company that formerly traded with us and put back onto the European market under another brand name.

Hmm it wasn't an Indian company specialising in running call-centres that are used by Australian telco's and perhaps big telco's in other countries as well? 8-) (sorry for the slight off-topic diversion)

Quite likely.

Because educated 'middle class' Indians speak pretty good english, a large industry has sprung up in India 'outsourcing' call centre facilities for many native english speaking countries. It's considered to be a good employment prospect there.

When they call themselves Jim or Annie - you know you're talking to one of the nastier ones. They 'make up' what they think are friendly sounding names to the Western - hmmm Oz even - ear. It's pretty obvious when it's fake though. I'd be happier if they said ' hello this is Pradeep / Reshma talking to you ' actually.

I've had varied experiences.

The worst was when American Express offloaded their UK call centre - the guy on the end of the phone tried to tell me I was 'mistaken' when he simply didn't understand my question. Luckily, Amex must have twigged the problem and did a telephone survey where I gave them hell for outsourcing. They use real Brits again now !

On another occasion I got cold-called by an Indian sounding chap calling himself some english sounding name. It was obviously a con - so I confronted him - and he giggled in an embarassed fashionand and hung up the line.

Most recently I spoke to an Indian gent in a call centre who was actually helpful, polite, knowledgable and didn't have the deep accent ! Maybe he wasn't in India after all ? LOL !
