Advice re 2000-2001 9-5 Sedan or Wagon (Estate)

I''m seeking any advice - good, bad, gratuitously ugly - about a potential purchase of a 9-5 in the '00-'01 range. After owning nine SAABs since 1973 [two 96s, a Sonett, a much-beloved 95 (lost in Hurricane Hugo at the age of 18), two 99s and two classic 900s], I am looking at retiring my 1990 900 with regret. The ninth car is a 1998

900seT, my feelings for which I can't bring myself to articulate. Fact is, I don't really like it that much...(my wife does).

I don't know enough yet about the 9-5 in its earlier incarnation around 2000. I'm pretty sure it's wiser to avoid the V6 but how is the 4 cyl holding up? ...what about the standard turbo as opposed to the HO version? I have bought great SAABs in the later years of a model range, i.e. the 99 was pretty notorious in the early '70s, as was the 900 in the late '70s and early '80s and the early GM cars also semed to have many "issues." A cable clutch...what was SAAB thinking?

A 9-5 in the early years of its kind somewhat scares me...anyone with an opinion to spare? TIA

Don't know if this will still do you any good, but we have a '99 9-5 wagon with the 2.3 turbo and 5 speed - it is a great car. No major problems, I'm amazed at how well SAAB had this car sorted out in the beginning.

If a mechanic checkout, maintenance history and the price are good, go for it!

thinking?
