c900 rust

Hello,

My 1992 Saab 900 is beginning to show a bit of rust at the bottom of the doors. Is there something that I can do to stop it from getting worse?

And also a related question:

This car is painted in the citron silver color. I've noticed lately that underneath black parts of the trim (e.g. side mirrors, rear pillar vent) dark streaks on the paint have begun to show. It's as if black pigment is running down from the plastic/rubber in the rain and staining the paint. Is there any way to get rid of this, short of re-painting the whole car?

If it is in the inside, try soaking it in a product like dinitrol or waxoyl. They will actually soak through any surface rust and coat the better metal. They won't stop it, but they will slow it down.

If it on the outside, sand off the paint, get a wire brush head on a drill or angle grinder, and attack the rust until you can see bare metal. Then get it coated with a high zinc primer, and have it properly sprayed to match the car. If it goes through then you are looking at finding a welder who knows Saabs and getting a patch panel welded in and ground back.

It could be that someone has used a product like back to black. Most of them shouldn't stain paintwork through. Might be worth removing them from the car, and see if a large residue has built up and is washign down when it gets wet washing/rain etc.
