C900 Steering Column Movement?

Hello again

I picked up my new 93 model c900 T16S Aero today. All seems very fine except...

As I was arriving home, I noticed that there is some in-out movement of the steering column, probably 1/4 to 1/2 inch - I have to tug a little on the wheel and it slides in and out. It's definitely the column, not a loose steering wheel bolt, as I've taken off the panel under the dash and felt the column move.

The car steers absolutely fine, but I called the vendor (a Saab specialist) - he said not to worry, likely to be a little wear on the collapsible cage, and it's often seen on c900s.

What do you folks out there think? Should I worry? The car's under warranty, so I do have a comeback if there is a problem.

Thanks again for your help.

Perfectly normal. The column is made up of an inner keyed shaft sliding in an outer tube.

Nothing to do with wear in the collapsible cage - that is a truly clueless statement for a Saab specialist to make.

Mine did that for at least 100,000 miles. I investigated and couldn't find anything concerning at the time - linear motion on the axis of the steering wheel - right?

so you mean 'axial motion' ;-) MH

How about "endplay on the shaft"? I think that that's what he was describing, and it's what I based my answer on. Still normal if it's what he's describing, and still not the collapsible cage...

Yes, that's what I meant. Once again, thanks all for your advice.
