handbrake 1990 saab 9000

I'm having some trouble with the handbrake on a 1990 saab 9000. excessive movement in the handbrake lever and little grip from the handbrake. the brake pads have lots of material on them still. the adjusters on the handbrake lever are all as tight as they'll go. the haynes manual talks of an adjuster on the caliper but I can't find this. your thoughts ladies and gentlemen please.

I recently had this problem. One of the cables had rusted and snapped at the caliper. Replaced cables and all is well.

The caliper adjusters are hidden behind a (14mm?) bolt on the inboard face of each caliper. You need to remove these bolts, and use a 7mm allen key to adjust. This is an unusual size; most sets don't have a

7mm. and you may need to buy one especially.

The procedure for setting up the brakes is outlined here:

It is essential that you follow the procedure - getting the brakes to work correctly is almost impossible if you do things out of sequence.

Good luck.

13mm, I am almost positive.

Yes. The bolt that covers the adjustment screw comes out like a normal bolt, and don't force anything. Don't lose the copper washer that is on that cover-bolt, or water will get in and make the next replacement a replacement of the whole caliper.

Not a time-consuming job, though, but you do need that allen wrench.

how big-a-job is replacing the cables? the HBOL talks about dropping the fuel tank, rather avoid that...

I've looked on the website and I think I recall seeing the cover below which is the 4mm allen-key bolt. but I don't remember seeing anything on this 14mm (or 13mm) cover that will help me remove it, the plug blocking the hole seemed recessed with no slot for a screwdriver and no obvious way of getting it off, either I was looking at the wrong thing or I'm not understanding how it is removed.

Hi, I've got a nice diagram that came with my last caliper - it shows where everything is - if you drop me an email I'll scan the single A4 page in and send it. Remove the 'nospamhere' bit from the reply address.
