But extremely comfortable over the bumps of UK roads.

I haven't actually tried one so can't comment but my 9000 is pretty good over most 'potholes' that aren't too deep and goes over 'sleeping policemen' very nicely.

Only other car I ever had that such a good ride was a 1970 Rover 2000TC ( the P6 ) type.

Interesting in that it shared with Saabs to follow an excellent 2 litre 4 cyl engine ( later upsized to 2200cc ).

Is that colloquial for a speed bump?

In any case, it depends on what year/model 9000 you have. I can tell you from 1st hand experience that a 92 9000T is *not* a comfortable car to drive through city streets. It had a very taut suspension and soft low profile wheels/tires. But it was a pisser (that's good) to drive on the backroads.

OTOH, my daughters '93 9000CSET is very plush and with the 60 series 15 inch tires really soaks up the bumps when going over anything sleeping in the road. ;-)

Graham I would like to make a point to the 4x4 debate having known a time when there was no 70mph limit and roads were quiet enough to allow for a spin without hitting a car coming the other way. In comparison driving now is a pretty lame affair with the biggest excitement being beating some boy racer away from traffic lights - some excitement! Consequently if one is going to be often stuck in traffic, negotiating pot holes and speed humps I believe some comfort is called for. Whilst my NG900 is more comfortable than my small turbo diesel it is not as good as my daughters 4.7 Grand Cherokee or my sons V6 Freelander. Clearly the big wheels and good sprung/unsprung weight ratio helps, plus the seats like armchairs. As regards the gas guzzling comments from a Saab group this is odd, is a Saab such an economical vehicle with about 24 mpg round town? Using the gas guzzling theme we should all be in 800cc boxes or the proper route of electric cars charged overnight from nuclear power stations. I agree with you about the Rover, de dion rear axle IIRC.
