"Replace Key Battery" light, 2000 9-3...?

Several of you responded to my earlier post this week concerning comments on a '98 900 I was thinking of buying, and for that I thank you.

Long story short, I bought a 2000 9-3 today. It's great. One minor thing I don't understand: when I start it, a message on the panel says "Replace Key Battery." The car has two original keys, which don't have buttons on the grips, and two original fobs, which both work fine. What does the error message mean? Replace batteries in the fobs (say, how do it know...?), or something else? Thanks in advance for your comments and help.

Yep. It means the batteries in the key fob you used to unlock the car need changing. It knows because the key fobs check their own battery state and then send that info to the car every time you press the button.

Cheers,

Colin.
