After a 'light' collision and costly repair now the gear gave up. Coincidence or normal at 195.000 km's. Anyone an idea how much a second hand
5-gear may cost and more importantly how many hours it will take the average garagist to take out and replace the old gear by a new/2nd hand one...??????
thanks, Pieter

Hi,
gave up? what do you mean? cant you engage any gear or what is going on?
gearbox is less likely to give up on under 200.000km in a non-turbo, but it is possible.
i am sorry, but it will take pretty long and the replacement gearbox will not be very cheap either. i can imagine you are in a bad position now, as i am in a similar one with my
9000T, but i know that will fix my gearbox, as it is cheaper than another (read : not new) car for me. not that i want to say non-turbo NG900s are not worth saving, but well. you make the call
bye

You'll have to look around at parts yards like Goldwing and English-Swedish for the tranny. As for replacing it yourself, it is a big job. I just did it last April on my '95 Aero and it took three hours to remove and another three plus a bit longer to install, and that is if you have someone in the mix that knows what he's doing.
The hardest part is coaxing, more like forcing, the tranny back into its place against the engine. I would recommend spending $25 for a pair of alignment studs to guide the tranny in, which I didn't have but will the next time I try this (perish the thought!). These are available as service parts from your Saab dealer, and maybe elsewhere. Also, get a factory service manual. If you don't have the studs you'll spend 30 minutes or more trying to shoehorn the damn thing back in place, and in so doing you may damage something in the process.
Be advised that a pre-'94 transaxle will not fit your '96.
