Saabvideos.com - Bandwidth running seriously low

All,

I hope everyone has been enjoying the Saab Videos as of late on

formatting link

There are now 185 videos online and most can be transferred to DVD to be best displayed on a Television.

I have recently heard from the owner of this website that the bandwidth being used on the site is quickly becoming very close to the maximum allowed and will shortly become a problem for the site for users accessing it.

What we really need is someone who has a place with "unlimited bandwidth" with at least 30-50 GB of free space that can host all of the Saab videos plus themselves so we can just leave the web page along with the respected images on the

If you know of someone that can help us with this, I would be greatly appreciative.

I eagerly look forward to your response.

Don't want to sound negative, but it would help tremendously if many of the videos were recoded to a lower resolution or bitrate. Some are pretty huge and transfer very very slowly such that I didn't bother trying to download some and bandwidth at my end is not a problem.

Ryan, Please excuse my dumb question, but is the bandwidth problem a monthly bandwidth quota problem, or an instantaneous one of too many simultaneous requests? In other words, would it help to ask everyone to hold off till next month? Sorry I don't have a solution for your hosting problem. I hope someone does.

On another note,I saved your html page on my hard drive and changed all occurrences of the absolute reference ---href="/videos/--- to a relative ---href="SAAB_videos/--- where I stored the videos on my hard drive underneath the directory where I saved the html. I open the html then to view the videos. Works real nice as an index. Thanks again. Ted Yurkon

The problem is that good quality hosting, with good, reliable bandwidth costs money. There's no such thing as unlimited bandwidth (actually, we're talking about data transfer, not bandwidth).

Anyone running a server pays for the transfer they use - and if the quality of the connection is good, they pay quite a bit for it.

The disk space is less of an issue - I could spare that space without too much difficulty. The real issue is how much transfer the site needs. Do you have any idea of the current monthly transfer?

Grunff,

Thank you, I will be checking the current bandwidth usage with the site owner and get back to you ASAP.

Ted,

That is really cool! Do you have ALL of the videos?

David,

I know, but it's a monthly bandwidth usage problem I believe, not necessarily a large amount of users at one time. I can check on that.

As for quality, I don't feel comfortable having web-based quality videos vs. TV/DVD quality videos (ie. 2 different types), plus there would be an enormous visual difference as I have tried this. The videos now, although large for some, are the most compressed, but also the best quality, so the perfect blend since the 720 x 480 videos can be transferred to DVD to watch on TV.

Ok but quarter frame i.e. 352 x 288 (or 320 x 240 for NTSC I believe), done in Divx results in some very good quality too, fine for playback on my hardware divx dvd player. Just think you could save a whole load of bandwidth.

David,

Not everyone has a Hardware Divx DVD player, It needs to be available and work for "everyone".

I hope someone can provide some FREE alternatives.

Native TV format needs to be at least 720 x 480 here, nothing less. The ones that are less came from others, so I reluctantly posted them on the site.

Ryan, Yes, in answer to your question, I think I have all the videos, so I won't contribute any more to your bandwidth problem:-) I know you don't think bittorrent would work so weill, but what about some kind of video ring setup. Say, I agree to host 2 or 3 gigs of the videos, and have a link to the next/previous site in the ring? If you could get enough volunteers, it would work, without the user needing asny special skills or software. Ted

No but they can play them on the PC or transcode them to MPEG2 and DVD if they feel so inclined.

Strictly speaking that's not true. For full frame D1 then yes but VCD and SVCD come in different formats for example. I think you're creating more of a problem than exists but hey, it's just my opinion, feel free to ignore me.

Nope, it needs to be 720 x 576. ;o)

I really like the fact that you don't compress the picture more than you do. It's very obvious more compression = less pic quality.

Henrik,

Exactly, I don't want less quality videos up there.

So, how are your videos going? I'm expecting a DVD with your Saab videos shortly.

What videos do you have already? I think I've asked you many times.
