Steering drift in 97 900S

Hi,

When I bought my 97 900S at the start of the year I noticed the straight-ahead position of the steering wheel was a little off-centre. A wheel alignment fixed that, but I'm sure it still feels looser when turning the wheel to the right than to the left, and if I hold the wheel loosely while coming to a stop it wants to move to the right.

Is this a sign of something bad? The front tyres are getting towards the end of their life, and I don't know if that's a factor (it looks like the alignment had been left out for a while -- wear is uneven) and the left-front has a different tread pattern to the others.

It could be something as simple as a slight camber to the road if it isn't real pronounced.

Looks like a combination of bad wheel alignment/wheel balancing. All will be sorted out when you replace these tyres at the shop as this something they should do. The fact that they are worn in the manner u describe plus the way it moves upon breaking, goes some way to support this theory. I would also check your break pads as you could for another reason have uneven wear on the pads/shoes/disks.

All can be checked at the same time. The latter I would be careful the garage doesn't try and force you to change them. Make sure you actually see the pads/shoes/disks and see how different the are, if at all before agreeing to the change. Some might be able to wait until the next service for example.

Uneven tyre wear by itself could be making it feel like that? As another poster suggested it could just be road camber, because it's a pretty subtle effect, but combined with what you describe that seems to make perfect sense. It's just had a service, and the brakes are good (master cylinder got replaced).

I was a bit worried it sounded like more serious front-end wear.

I will! Thanks! Can anyone recommend good value 205/50R16s? :) (Currently wearing Michelin Pilot HXs.)
