Please HELP with my 2001 Saturn L200 Problem

My Saturn L200 has 51000 miles on it and it is an automatic. It has the 2.2 Liter engine. Between 1 and 3 thousands RPMs the car functions very normally. BUT when I give it more gas then usual it starts to climb into the 4 and 5 thousands then the car shuttered hidiously and actually starts to loose speed. You can hear the engine whine up but the car is very VERY sluggish. I think it is a transmission problem, possibly torque converter.

If anyone could help me with this problem that would be great!

Thank you, Adam

Does sound like a transmission problem. Have you checked the fluid level? Not sure if the L200 trany is the same as my Lw300. On mine, there is no dipstick and it is a bit of a nuisance to check. I think that the philosophy was that if it isn't leaking, should be good for 100K miles.

I recall that there was a 'recommended check' (not bad enough to be a recall) for the torque converter. Check with Saturn service and see if you are part of this. Either way sounds like you need service before serious damage is done.
