SW2 windshield wipers are posessed

The wipers on my 96 SW2 with 60K are turning on all by themselves about once a week. Playing with the wiper on/off and delay switch doesn't seem to have any effect. Only way I have found to stop them so far is to shut the car off when the wipers are down. Anybody have ideas on a cause and/or fix ?

Sounds like the park switch on the wiper motor acting up. When you turn off the power to the wipers it keeps power to the wiper motor until they are almost at the parked position and the motor should coast to a stop with the wipers parked. The switch may not open soon enough, long enough or at all. It may be a worn cam, loose switch or other problem with that part of the wiper circuit. Opps - just looked at the schematic for the 95 S series. The wiper motor is controlled by a module that is part of the motor that is electronic. So it's just got more complex as the switch may not be mechanical. It could be a magnetic reed switch, hall effect sensor or something else. The problem may also be somthing electronic in the module. I can't really tell you more without one to take apart. If mine was acting up I'd have it apart tommorow and tell you what's up. :^)

Mine was doing the same on my 96 SW2. The wiper module was bad, but unfortunately, this is an integral part of the wiper motor assembly. You have to replace thw whole shebang as a unit. It's a pretty involved task, but if you're handy with tools and not breaking lots of funky little plastic pieces, doable. The Chilton's manual gives OK instructions. Make sure you disable the airbag before diving under the dash!

Mine is no longer posessed after replacing the wipre motor assembly. Good luck!

Thanks for the insights and recommendations all. I'll be sure to pass along whatever I find when I pull it apart.
