Access through trunk floor to top of gas tank/sending unit

I just pulled back the trunk mat of my '63 Lark for the first time in quite a while. I noticed an open hole that allowed me to peek in, to the top of the gas tank and what I assume is a sending unit. There is no filler cover or the like over this hole in the trunk floor above the gas tank. Should there be? Looking at the body parts manual, I'm unable to determine this.

Thanks, Bill Pressler "63 Lark Daytona Skytop R1

Yep, Bill; there should be.

The cover is P/N 289710, fits most 1947-1966 models, including yours.

yes, but the cover is just a piece of tar paper.

Do what I did. Go to the hardware store, and by a soft plastic kitchen sink stopper. The one that's about 4 to 5 inches in diameter. Looks like it was made for the car, and isn't cardboard.

Handy center knob makes it snap in and out like a breeze.

The hole is there to allow removal ind installtion of a new sending unit. On a lot of cars while there, it is off center and some screws are hard to remove, and eevn harder to re thrhread.

Tiy can gethe covers from most vendors

I just used a round electrical junction box cover... about a $1 at the local hardware store.

Mine had a metal cover, that had a concave stamping, and brown jute/fiber glued to it to match the height of the floor, and inplace of screws it used what looked like a T shaped cotter pin, but they were under spring tension. When you pulled the plate up the pins came with it and then they expanded. I gave up trying to squeeze them back and get both back inplace at the same time and used self tapping screws.

Yes, but we were taking about a later car Bill, some used a tar paper deal held by a tar weather sealant.

Those T-shaped pins are just snap clips. I have 'em on the brake master cylinder cover on my 2R17A. You just lift the cover, and they pop out of their holes. Since the tips of the wires cross, they are narrow at the "point" and can simply be started in the hole and pushed to snap in place. A lot like like the clips used to retain interior door panels, AAMOF. I've never had to use tools to re&re this cover.

I wonder if the brake m/c covers are the same as the fuel tank access covers?

A lid from a can of tuna or soup will fit. Paint it with Rustoleum and use plumber's putty or some such to seal around it. Works great!
