Tires

My barn-find 63 Lark is nearing a point where I am going to get to road test it. Before it happens, I will need to get a set of tires for it. Doing some searching online (while at work, of course!) I am finding it impossible to find 195-75-15's on any of the manufacturer web sites. I figured they would have to be ordered but for a manufacturer to not even list them is rather strange to me. So, where do you guys get your skinny tires for your Larks?

I don't think anyone is making 195/75's any more. Most put 205/75's on. They are pretty close.

A 205/75R15 is only 10mm wider, about .4" and should work. Have you checked Coker or Cooper making any 195s?

Cooper lists a 65 series (195/65R15) or a 60 series. Nothing taller though in a 195. They are at

I think that the 195's can be had by searching for Volkswagen tires. A few years back I bought a set for my 57 Champion and then went back to larger bias ply tires. FlatheadGeo.

I have 195-75-15 wide whites on my 60 Lark Convertible. I got them from Coker, but they're pricey. I got them because of all the talk about the

205s being too wide for the 4-1/2 inch Stude wheels, but lots of people get along with the 205s just fine. By the way 205s were on the car when I got it.

195 & 205/75R15 are a common tire in a 1" whitewall or blackwall, it is the larger whitewall that will kill your budget

Really... Michelin X's would be an awesome period performance touch for a late Stude, even if they weren't factory installed.

A quick search on the Tirerack site brings up 0 results for 195/75-15, and 25 results for 205/75-15. It appears the 205 size is used on some trucks. AFAIR both Michelin and Pirelli offered the 195 size in their 'vintage reproduction' series, e.g. the Michelin X and the Pirelli Cinturato. If I can find the link again for those tires I will post it. Last time I called Tirerack did not handle them.

Hell, even 215R75's are getting tough to find anymore. But if you can do 205's I'd stick with that.

Still that size would replace the old 5.90/6.00-15. Note it is a tube type radial. Still, it is V rated. Haven't found the Michelin link yet.

I just bought a set of Firestone whitewall 215x75x15s last month at the local Firestone store. They had them in stock. They mounted them on my set of 15x6 Magnums and they put all the weights on the inside of the rim like I wanted. Paul Johnson

I run Cooper 2.05x75x15 on Ford 6 inch rims on my 64 Convertible. They work fine and don't rub. I bought them from Diamond Back as no one had 1 " WW. When I bought the Convertible it had 2.15x75x15 on the stock Stude 4.5 rims. It handled terrible. Now it handles good and look great as the wider rims fill the wheelwells nicely.

On my old '63 Lark which had the skinny wheels, I substituted a set of '55 President wheels which handled the 205's very well and handling was vastly improved. I also enjoyed using the '55 dawg dish caps as well!
