1996 Subaru Legacy clunking

Paycheck by paycheck I am working out the bugs in my '96 Legacy. I found out recently that my car had been previously written off and somehow trickled back into the "system" without any record of it's obviously severe accident.

Anyway, to the point:

I am getting a constant clunking noise from the front end when I go over various types of bumps and terrain. It's not a mechanical grind, rather a clunk that occurs when either of the front wheels go over a bump (speed bump, sunked sewer grate, etc...). If both wheels go over the same bump, the noise doesn't occur, it seems to be related to the wheels going over different bumps.

This lead me to think of the sway bar (stabalizer bar) being the culprit. I have replaced the sway bar links (both side) and the problem persists.

I am no mechanic, but IMHO I think it could be several things, most of which I intend to check myself:

- Loose struts or strut plate

- Play in the front control arms

- Possibly the sway bar mounts

- Something steering related

- Something that's just plain old loose.

If anyone has had this before and has had it repair, please share with me you recommendations. I understand this may be a uniquer case because it is likely related to the accident that it was in (and never fully repaired from.)

Thanks for your time,

Chris
