2008 Outback Drivetrain Noise

Hi all,

This is happening on a new 08 Outback with about 1300 miles. After the car has been parked for a period of time at work, a store, overnight, etc, After backing out of the parking spot and putting the car in drive, there is a pop/click sound from the front end. It happens only once and going through about 5 mph. Everytime you start to accel after that there is no noise, only when the car has been sitting for a period and when you first accelerate.

Any Ideas?

Thanks as always, Matt

Does it only happen when you have reversed, applied the brakes, and at the moment of driving forward ?

No, It seems that the first time the car goes into Drive, whether it be from reverse or not. The car just needs to be sitting for a period of time. It will not happen at stop signs/traffic lights, etc.

Thanks, Matt

I've got a pop/click noise on my 2006 Forester which is coming from the front passenger side axle area but mine can be heard as the car is backing up, braking and over uneven surfaces. The diagnosis was a loose axle nut was causing extra play in the disc which was causing the brakes to make noise. The nut was re-torqued and the noise is reduced but is still not entirely gone. I think I need a Subaru mechanic to inspect the axle. If any similar experiences please share or if anybody can explain why an axle nut could cause so many problems it would be much appreciated.

ABS recycling, in all likelihood. Probably does it every time you drive the car. Can sound like a 'crunch' or 'pop'.
