92 imprezza speedometer

Jul 31, 2004 3 Replies

The speedometer reads approximately twice the actual speed and oscillates wildly. It reads from 10 - 15 mph at idle with the car in park and approx

80mph at 45 - 50. However, the odometer is clocking miles correctly, and because of this I'm wondering if the problem is something other than the cable. Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks, Pete

My first guess would be voltage. When my alternator went out, my gauges were flying all over the place. On the plus side, I did get to see the needle on my '95 Legacy's speedometer hit 140, a speed I've never been able to reach. ;)

Hey Matt,

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure about the alternator only because the speedometer's been behaving this way for well over a year now. I'll check it out though.

Pete

Well, I would guess that the speedometer is electronically controlled somehow. I suppose that a malfunctioning eletronic controller could cause the erratic needle behavior.
