95 Impreza - clanking noise at certain speeds

Dec 11, 2005 3 Replies

Hi all

My daughter's impreza started making a clanking/screetching noise at certain speeds and startup. Initially I though that perhaps one of the heatshields came loose again, but that was not the case.

I did notice a drop or two of antifreeze around the pump area so I am assuming it is on its way out. When a subaru pump starts fails, do they make noise like that? (first I've heard that on a pump)

I've never had to replace a water pump on an impreza. Is it anything special? There seems to be a cover over the pump - is that part of the timing belt cover? Just loosen the alternator belt, loosen pump and put the new one in, right? Tia Remco

If it's like my 2000 Forester 2.5L engine then it is alittle more complicated than just removing a belt. Mine is driven by the timing belt so the timing belt covers must come off and the belt tensioner removed to get the water pump. The tensioner must be then reset by mounting it in the vertical position and SLOWLY compressing it. I suggest you go to

to see if there is a file on waterpump replacement.

Thanks! (the other poster Ed too)

I've never heard a water pump making metallic clanking noises - it certainly seems to come from that area. Is that a common thing these water pumps do?
