brakes sticking on 93 impreza

Sep 13, 2004 5 Replies

The brakes are sticking on my 93 impreza. The problem is intermittent: every once in a while stopped at a stop sign or a light, I will attempt to go and the brakes will stick and prevent the car from moving.

It does not appear to be the parking brake, because it happens at stop signs and traffic lights when the parking brake is not in use.

I opened up the rear drum brakes and sprayed them with brake parts cleaner, but the problem is still occurring?

Any ideas as to what could be wrong?

Thanks for your help,

Godfrey

No idea on your particular car, but often at around 10 years brakelines start to go. The fluid is pressed through when you push the pedal, but can't flow back through the worn out line. It happens after using the brakes because the heat causes the old brake line to expand further, pinching off its inards.

This happened to me on the rear of my 89 Taurus SHO about 4 years ago. Replaced the lines, and the brakes never stuck again.

Just a suggestion!

Hill-Holder not releasing properly?

Ken: You could be right about the hill holder. If that is indeed the problem, how can I fix or replace it?

Also, I just had the clutch replaced. Is it possible that the people who replaced the clutch messed up the hill-holder?

Yep. Hill holder needs adjusting whenever clutch or clutch cable is replaced or adjusted. Easy enough to do yourself but they should fix it for no charge seeing it should have been done at the time. Ask 'em nicely though. They're the ones with all the large blunt instruments! Cheers

Is the hill holder particularly difficult to disable completely? I'm starting to find it annoying. If I apply the brakes to slow myself while in reverse, the brakes remain applied -- to whatever degree I applied them -- until I again release the clutch.

You mean like baritone saxophones and tubas and timpani? :-)
