Car lags and even jurks and also a raddly or clanking noise

I own a 1993 Subaru Impreza It use to have a 1.8L engine. When i bought it the person replaced it because it had high milage. He replaced it with a

2.2L, but he left the 1.8 transmission and I recently replaced the clutch so i know that it shouldn?t be the problem. As I go to Drive down the road i shift from 1st to 2nd at 2.5RPMs right after i shift into 2nd it almost stops and jerk and it even makes a popping noise then thats when i let off the gas and down shift to first and try again, then i get success sometimes and it drives fine after it happens. I have tried in warm and cold weather it has happens more then ones and it also has done it in 1st 2nd 3rd gear I have replaced the spark plugs spark plug wires about 3-4 months ago. The 2.2L engine has about 102,000 miles on it. I also have another issue when I accelerate I hear a rattling almost a clicking noise, then when I left off the gas it stops. If anyone as any answers or solutions anything would help

Thanks!!

Rattling? Was the throwout bearing replaced when the new clutch was installed?

How is the timing belt? Is everything for a 2.2 there under the hood getting controlled? Crap in the fuel to an extreme may cause that. Definately go for a deeper thought than that ... If it doesn't do it past third. something causing the problem likes air, and alot of it.

You could go find an ea82 from 1987 with 654000 miles never rebuilt and count on 1 million more, but you probably aren't into that idea....

For the rattling: Engine mount, exhaust heat shield, connecting rod noise?

For the other issue: Is this a new problem or something the car had when you bought it? Was the ECU (Eprom) changed when the engine was changed?

good luck!

This is an old problem it was just never told to me at the time of buying but i checked it out my self and the spark plugs were black from carbon build up and took off the PCV and it was black inside cleaned it with throttle body cleaner still seems to have no effect. Im guessing it might be EGR not shure seem the air flow is fine but gas might be problem. Speaking of that i was informed that the gas was set to burn rich or fine how ever you call it were you add more gas to mixture something like that, but if i new were to adjust it that could help, but i think it said in the repair book it was automatic. any info would be nice Thanks
