keyless entry broken; cannot start car

I have a 98 Impreza Outback with keyless entry control unit H7110AS011. This has, for a while, been acting flaky. I guess it finally just died because today i could not start the car -- the only electrical things that worked were the: emergency flashers; horn; buzzer for key in ignition with door open; door locks. There was NO response from car to either of two remotes. I locked and unlocked doors, both manually from inside and via key from outside. I opened and closed every door etc. Still, all electrical systems are dead. On advice of mechanic, i located and removed the control unit. Still dead. I then removed both 20A fuses from wiring harness going to control unit. Still dead. So ... now what? Do i have to short some of the wires in the harness together in order to get this to work? I do not really care if the keyless system works -- i'll happily thorow it away -- i never use it anyway -- but i sure want the car to work !

Same thing Im thinking here. Disconnect the negative battery terminal for a

1/2 hour and see if that resets everything.

Some Imprezas/Foresters have a small black alarm reset button mounted at the bottom of the dash under the steering wheel. I think you need a pen or something to hit the recessed reset button.
