Does anyone here know if it is an open or closed deck engine in the 97 model?

C'mon Dave bring us up to speed here....WTF is a closed deck engine ???
heh, I can't tell you, I don't know enough about it... I have however found that google was my friend after a few pages... "the ej25 is the open deck non-turbo engine found in the rs(and early OBW). the ej257 is also a semi-closed deck."
so it appears that it is most likely to be an open deck... now, just got to find out WTF that means... from what I understand the open and semi-open deck are easier to modify.
also from here.

"The 1997 year model change over date, "96.6.6", saw a major internal and external redesign of the engine.*snip* After this time, all production engines are open deck design, including the STI and RA versions."
although they are talking about the EJ20, the EJ25(atleast my one), has the same bore, just longer stroke.
