'84 Pontiac Grand Am Power Steering CHIRPING????

120K miles on this Grand Am. when the car is cold, turning the steering wheel emits a loud chirping (fast repeating) sound and you can feel it in the steering wheel. I added what little fluid was missing from the PS pump resevoir, checked the belt tension, both appear fine. I'm guessing the pump is bad, but my father seems to think the issue lies elsewhere, in the assembly that is closer to the firewall. Anyone else had this problem?

Sounds like a loose or glazed belt. Maybe the alt is the culprit, trying to make up batt drain after starting.
