But...the thing never wore out!!! It was amazing what that car could take.

My Mom sold hers in 1972 and got our first Toyota, a '72 Corona. She didn't like the new Novas.

She got it with 50,000 on it in 1968 or '69. It belonged to the electric company, so the dealer said it probably had 150,000 on it.

They sold it with 37,000 showingso that was another 80,000 miles. Very minimal maintenance, and I don't recall a single repair. Some kid bought it and drove it to Seattle. Four years later it was back, but I didn't see it again after a few months. It still looked the same as when we had it.

If GM wanted to return to profitablility, they would dust off the blueprints and start making these things again. They'd sell em as fast as they could make em.

It's because people don't take care of their cars. They always seem to have money for eating out, clothes, junk to clutter their house. But ask them to spend money on their car, and they just don't want to do it. Women are particularly bad about this. That and a lot of people seem to drive their cars as if it were stolen.

It's both. Work on an airplane for a while and you'll be amazed at how crappy cars are in comparison. Stuff that should be machined is diecast instead, stuff that should be diecast is stamped. Nothing really seems to be intended for easy repair on cars.

But, talk to your neighbors about their cars and most of them won't even remember the last time they had their oil changed. The average owner has no idea there's a maintenance schedule in the owner's manual, let alone is following it.

It's a wonder cars last as long as they do.
