Engine Noise

I have a 1999 Camry LE with 89,000 miles. I have had oil changes every

3,000 miles and have done all scheduled maintenance work. I was just at the dealer to do the 90,000 mile service and have the timing belt replaced. While there, I asked them to check a noise I have been having.

It started abruptly about 8 months ago and is a ticking/tapping noise which is loudest first thing in the morning or at a cold start, especially on a cold day. I don't hear the noise at highway speeds, but can hear it, although muffled, at lower speeds while accelerating. The mechanic kept the car overnight to hear the noise first thing in the morning and said that it sounded like a connecting rod noise caused by excessive clearance. No explanation for how this could have happened. The same mechanic said that it was a valve noise back in December, but this time he said he did a more thorough check. He said that I could have major problems down the road or the noise may just be bothersome. I don't know what to do -- should I just sell the car and cut my losses. Thanks.

Could be piston slap. I've had it for 5 years and 50k miles. Noise disappears after warm-up.

Doesn't the engine burn oil?

Is there a connection between piston slap and bad piston skirt?

I think piston slap depends more on design than anything else. When I lived in the frozen north I had only one car with the problem. The engine was quite noisy when the temperature was below about 10 degF, even when new, but the noise went away once the engine was about halfway warmed up. I had several cars with over

100,000 miles that never had any noise from pist>

It's not burning any oil.

Thanks for trying to help.

if you have solid lifters, check the valve adjustment. Otherwise, wait for it to get louder.

Searched the Web for "piston slap" and "piston skirt". What I found with problems with those usually mention burning oil as one of the symptoms (beside the noise, of course).

I also have noise problem, light toned gurgling that's more like chattering. The noise doesn't appear when cold started, like piston slap noise is supposed to appear. It appears after driving about a mile and when accelerator is lightly pushed, and doesn't go away until after about 10 miles of driving, in contrast to piston slap which supposed to disappear after warm up When I posted the problem some time ago, somebody said I might have piston slap/skirt problem. After reading the articles on the problem, don't think that's what I have. And I see no power loss, no loss of gas mileage - and I don't burn oil,

So, wonder what you and I have...
